France and Germany were bitter enemies from 1914 to 1918, a century later they cooperated in the production of this touching story of the aftermath of that terrible conflict.

As Anna mourns the loss of her fiancé during the war she encounters a mysterious Frenchman who seems to have come to Germany to pay his respects. Or is there more to it than meets the eye?

Next Thursday, the 17th, we will be screening "Frantz" the Franco-German romantic drama. As usual, doors will open at 6:30, screening at 7:00. We have our bar in full swing and biscuits and cheese will be on offer.

While Covid restrictions have been lifted, it is still with us, so if you are feeling unwell please recover at home.

We have a great night on offer next Thursday (20th October), all the thrills and spills of a Film Society AGM, AND a movie!

To recover from the excitement of the AGM we offer an Iranian mystery.

When a group of university friends head to the Caspian shore in northern Iran  for a picnic they hadn't anticipated one of them would disappear. Let's follow the misadventures of the rest of the group as they try to piece together what has happened to their missing friend.

As always, doors open at 6:30, screening will follow the AGM, which starts at 7:00.

We look forward to seeing you there.

This month we will be enjoying gallic shenanigans as the enigmatic man in a hat travels across France in his Fiat 500 pursued by a Citroen load of even more enigmatic bald men. And is that a dead body travelling with them? Only one way to find out; join us on Thursday 15th September at 6:30 (screening starts at 7).

Light nibbles will be available as will Phil Riley's pre-film tipples from the Charlie Miller bar. Vertical consumption is now permitted, horizontal consumption is not recommended.

Covid is still out there going its hardest so if you are feeling unwell, best to stay home, recover and join in next time.

See you at the movies.

Friday, July 15, 2022

Our July movie will be screened on the 4th Thursday of July, Thursday 28th.  Reluctantly we have been forced to make a late change and will be screening "PERFUMES" a comedy drama from France in lieu of "La Belle Epoque".  Rotten Tomatoes didn't think this film was on the nose as the RT audience gave Perfumes 100%.

As usual SRHT doors open at 6:30pm and the curtain goes up at 7pm.  Phil's pre movie drinks available from upstairs and nibbles as well.

If you are unwell, we hope you  get better soon and politely ask you  to consider holding off until next month when we screen "The Worst Person in the World" (18th August) a romance/drama from Norway.

We're on the fourth Thursday this month, so the film will be Thursday the 23rd.

Rosa's wedding travails hit the right chord with last month's audience, scoring a creditable 4.2 Stars in the Star Box ratings.

This month we're off to Oregon where truffle hunter Rob finds his peaceful hermit lifestyle upended when his loved and much valued truffle-hunting pig is pignapped. While there's no doubting his commitment to getting his buddy back he first has to find out who has his pig.

We have been having some technical difficulties with our card payments. We will have the technology there, but can't 100% guarantee it will be functioning. Cash payments are reliable.

We are getting closer to normality so light nibbles will be available as will the pre-film tipple. Vertical consumption is now permitted, horizontal consumption is not recommended.

Doors open at 6:30, screening at 7:00.

Last month's Icelandic offering was well received with a star box rating of 4.4, next Thursday (the 21st) we hope to match or better it.

This time we're going back to the 1966 Swedish classic "Persona", written and directed by Ingmar  Bergman and starring Liv Ullmann, Persona is considered one of the masterpieces of cinema, and is listed in the 1001 films to see you before you die.

Covid restrictions continue to ease but some still remain. If you feel unwell, please stay home, otherwise we'll see you on the 21st.

Doors open at 6:30, screening at 7:00.

"PIG" USA (Drama 2021)

4.1 ****

Nicolas Cage at his best.  A simple story, a superb character study about a man and his best friend and worker.

"Rosa's Wedding (Spain 2020)

4.2 ****+

A feel good film par excellence according to our members.  We were on Rosa's side as she broke her shackles, undid family ties and tied the knot to herself!

"Persona" Sweden 1966

2.4 **+

A trip back to 1966, the year we moved from PSD to Decimal currency.  Ingmar Bergman's psychological drama gave members possibly PST!  Many patrons would have upgraded their ratings after working it over in their mind. A cinema classic.

Woman at War" (Iceland)

4.4 ****+

Our 70 strong members warmed to Halla, a single woman, friendly neighbour, concerned citizen and crusader in this quirky, satirical and complicated ecomelodrama that thoroughly entertained our appreciative audience.

Monday, March 14, 2022

Next week, Thursday 24th March we will be joining Halla "the Woman of the Mountain", choir teacher and secret activist as she tackles the threats to Iceland's environment while dodging the law.

Her campaign is on the brink of success when an unexpected development leads her down another life path.

The doors will be open at 6:30, drinks will be available from that time and the screening will start at 7:00.

Covid restrictions seem to be easing, if these mean a significant change to how we operate we will let you know.

Looking forward to seeing you all on the 24th of March. As always if you are feeling unwell please stay at home and we will see you next month.
