 "Another Round" (Denmark) 16th December 2021 at the SRHT.



December is busy, but please find time to view this Award winning movie starring Mads Mikkelsen. "Another Round' won the Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards and the BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in the English language plus the European Award for the Best Film.

 On Thursday next week (the 18th) we join a lonely German woman as she seeks to brighten up the world's most desolate motel on the iconic Route 66.


As usual doors open at 6:30 and screening commences at 7.


At this stage no changes to Covid restrictions have been announced, so requirements regarding social distancing and wearing masks remain in place.

Unless there is a further tightening of restrictions we will be holding our AGM at 7:00pm on Thursday 14th October , immediately before the October screening. 

For anybody considering joining the committee, here is a summary of the various roles:

1. Chair

  • Convene Committee meetings
  • Liaise with venue manager
  • Liaise with film society federations
  • Introduce films on screening nights

2. Treasurer

  • Record receipt and payment of money
  • Bank cash
  • Pay invoices
  • Recommend fees and pro rata reductions
  • Manage Society's reserves
  • Maintain financial records

3. Secretary

  • Record and file Committee meeting minutes
  • Receive and distribute incoming correspondence
  • Prepare and send outgoing correspondence

4. Publicity Officer

  • Maintain email list
  • Send email notifications of upcoming events or relevant changes
  • Maintain society Facebook page
  • Maintain website/blog
  • Develop publicity campaigns and materials

5. Membership Officer

  • Maintain membership database
  • Print and issue membership cards
  • Record attendance at screenings
  • Update membership details and record renewals

6. Film Selection Committee Chair

  • Convene Film Selection sub-committee
  • Bring recommendations to Committee for endorsement and approval.
  • Obtain screening rights from film distributors

7. DVD Library Officer

  •  Maintain society DVD collection
  • Facilitate loans to members

8. Wine Acquisition Officer (Need to have Responsible Service of Alcohol certification)

  • Ensure wines are available for screening nights
  • Oversee serving of wine, ensuring compliance with RSA guidelines.

9. General Committee

  • Check in members on film night
  • Assist with receipt of payments
  • Jointly make decisions on the running of the Society.
  • Help clean up once the screening commences.
  • Act as Covid Marshall (if certificated)

 In 18th century France a young painter, Marianne, is commissioned to do the wedding portrait of Héloïse without her knowing. Therefore, Marianne must observe her model by day to paint her portrait at night. Day by day, the two women become closer as they share Héloïse's last moments of freedom before the impending wedding.


At this stage there is no change to the Covid restriction that applied last month. So please check-in, socially distance and wear your mask.

 The last female bee hunter in Europe finds her livelihood threatened when a group of nomadic beekeepers move into her territory. This dramatic documentary traces her struggle to restore the natural balance and save the bees.


Covid restrictions will apply, as they have at all screenings this year.
In addition this month masks are required
. If you don't wish to wear one, please don't  come they are not optional. Similarly if you feel unwell please wait until next month.


So, next Thursday 19th August, doors open at 6:30 screening starts at 7:00.

 Unless things take a turn for the worse between now and Thursday the 22nd, we'll be heading to Iceland for this month's film. If nothing else we should be feeling acclimatised.




July's film is the story of Halla, a middle aged choir teacher waging a secret war against the Icelandic aluminium industry. This film was Iceland's entry in the 2019 Academy Awards foreign language 


As restrictions currently stand we will still won't be able to offer food or wine.


The following requirements remain, but could change between now and the screening:

* Social distancing rules will apply throughout the theatre complex 

* Contact tracing is required, either through QR Code scanning (preferred) or on paper. These options will both be available.

* Seating will be relaxed, but spaces should be left between groups.

 It's difficult to think of a less likely source of comedy than the sudden death of arguably the most brutal dictator of the 20th Century. But that is the premise of this month's award winning film.


"The Death of Stalin" follows the machinations of ambitious politburo apparatchiks when "the boss" suddenly departs this mortal coil. 


So come and join us next Thursday (the 17th) to see if this improbable choice  works. As usual the doors will open at 6:30, the film will screen at 7:00. 


We still won't be offering food and wine, but Covid willing we are hoping to have something to offer in July.


While we are edging closer to normality the following requirements still apply:

 This month we're off to Smalltown, mid-west USA, to share the experience of an ageing US Navy veteran coming to terms with the inevitable changes that later life brings.


"Lucky" boasts a cast of familiar names and faces and has attracted plenty of positive reviews.

 Fun fact - if the first of the month is a Thursday, the third Thursday of the month is the 15th; i.e. this week, not next as one befuddled individual believed. Sorry about that!

A Stormy Night for March

 Our March screening will be on the 11th, the **Second** Thursday of the month.


This month we will watching the Japanese comedy/drama "After the Storm". After the figurative storm of a series of poor decisions Ryota is given the opportunity to reunite with his estranged and distrusting family by an actual storm.

 On Thursday 18th February we will be screening our second film for 2021. Moving from the "Far East" to Eastern Europe, February sees Reels popping behind the Iron Curtain for a hot romance during a cold war.

In 1950's Poland two people fall in love, but their different backgrounds and temperaments  make a difficult situation almost impossible. Named for its time "Cold War" was one of two foreign language films (the other being "Roma") nominated for the Academy Award for best director in 2018.

 Barring any unexpected turns we will be getting our 2021 program underway on Thursday 21st January. The doors will be open from 6:30, we ask that once you are through the check-in process you go straight into the  auditorium and take your seat.

We will finally be showing the Academy Award winning "Parasite" - the Korean satirical comedy/drama.

All 2020 memberships will be extended into 2021, full memberships until December 31st and 3 month memberships for the outstanding months remaining. Please bring your card with you, if you have lost it let us know and we can replace for a $5 replacement fee.

New members are, of course, welcome.
